Special Board Meeting to discuss the APTA Survey Results

June 22, 2002

Alligator Point, FL

Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by President Linc Barnett

Ann Maruszak requested that the Membership and Communications Committee be separated into two committees. A motion was made by Barbara James and seconded by Joe Hambrose. The motion was unanimously approved the APTA Board.

Linc Barnett requested that Ann Maruszak, former chair of the Membership and Communications Committee continue as the chair for the Communications Committee and also recommend a new chair for the Membership Committee.

She stated that she would first discuss the change with the current committee members to see if anyone would like to assume the new Membership Committee chair. She will also ask the current members which committee(s) they would like to serve on.

A discussion was initiated regarding the message boards on the APTA web site. It was recommended that the message-board should be removed in favor of one email contact.

Linc Barnett requested that Ann Maruszak contact Alan Feifer to see if he could assist in any way with our web site.

Linc Barnett asked Bob Burnett to contact Van Johnson to find out:

  1. The yard goods and white goods trash pickup dates
  2. What materials are acceptable for pickup

The Board asked Bob Burnett to research the possibility of the county placing a serviced trash receptacle at the three most used beach access points located at: Chip Morrison, Fiesta Drive and at the s-curve / boat ramp area.

Based upon the APTA member survey results, the Board determined that current and future water quality and availability issues are a major area of concern. The Board requested Linc Barnett to contact the Alligator Point Water Resources District Board to enter into a partnership on the water board’s planned strategic planning project regarding these issues.

Ann Maruszak recommended that an insert be placed in the newsletter with pertinent information and contact numbers. The Board modified this idea by stating that the last page of each issue be used for this purpose. The board suggests that all personal contact information be approved prior to publication.

The Board asked Doc Carr to contact Doris Gibbs to determine if it is legal for Florida taxpayers to vote in more than one county/state as suggested by attendee at the June APTA meeting.

The Board requested that Linc Barnett contact Sheriff Varnes to ask if he would write a column in the APTA newsletter and also provide crime statistics for the Point to be published in our newsletter and on our web site.

The Board is hopeful that a deputy dedicated to the Point could be provided pending county budget.

Steve Fling will present a Fire Study at the July 13th APTA meeting. We may wish to ask Steve to make his presentation available for the next issue of the APTA newsletter and for posting on our web site.

Ann Maruszak stated that the survey revealed that many taxpayers do not use their correct Alligator Point home address. The Board stated that the process for obtaining correct information should be posted on the information page of our newsletter.

Linc Barnett presented letters for the Board to read that will be sent to U.S. Senators Graham and Nelson, U.S. Congressman Boyd, Florida State Senator Kendrick and Florida State representative Lawson appealing to them to act on our behalf in our beach erosion problem.

The Board requested Dick Water to gather information to provide to taxpayers to educate them on ways they can play a role in counteracting beach erosion and assist with beach restoration / nourishment.

Some members of the Board stated that it is necessary to inform APTA members that APTA is limited in its ability to do more than influence county, state and federal agencies regarding beach erosion mitigation and road protection projects.

The Board feels that many of the issues and concerns raised in the survey will be resolved through more effective communication measures. The Board feels that the APTA meetings, newsletter, and web site are adequate communication resources, but that we could do a better job dispensing information through these resources.

A motion to adjourn was made by Doc Carr and seconded by Joe Hambrose. The meeting was adjourned at 12:20 p.m.
