Bed Tax Public Workshop Scheduled

Workshop #2 Rescheduled

Oyster Radio News; WOYS 100.5

(Franklin) County officials are considering levying a bed tax to help pay for tourist related facilities in the county and a pair of public hearings will be held on the issue later this month to see what the public thinks about the idea.

Bed taxes, which are charged on rental homes and motel and hotel units, are a popular way to fund tourist based facilities in Florida. Bed Taxes also pass the cost of maintaining those facilities on to the people who tend to use them, instead of taking the money from local ad valorem taxes.

The idea of a bed tax has been discussed a number of times in Franklin County, but the tax has never really got a lot of support. County officials say the money raised through the tax could help cover the costs of maintaining the county park on St. George Island as well as other public recreational facilities.

A committee was created earlier this year to work on a draft proposal, and they are now ready to present the plan to the public. That will be done during two public workshops in Apalachicola and in Carrabelle. The first will be held on Tuesday, November 18th, at 7:00 p.m., at the Franklin County Courthouse Annex. The second will be held on Thursday, November 20th, Tuesday, December 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at the Carrabelle Senior Center

People who would like to have more information on the proposed bed tax before the public workshops should call 653-9419.
