Posted January 8, 2004 NOTE from APTAWEB: This NEWS article was copied from Oyster Radio’s web site County to Investigate Oyster Farming at Alligator Harbor County Commissioners Tuesday (January 6, 2004) authorized a state study of Alligator Harbor to see if the area would be suitable for an oyster aquaculture project. The county already has a clam aquaculture project at Alligator Harbor – about 50 people are taking part in that. A few oystermen have since expressed an interest in trying to grow oysters at the harbor, but the state isn’t sure whether it would be a viable project. The biggest problem would likely be the cost of growing the oysters since inexpensive wild caught oysters are easily available in the area. County commissioners say they are interested in at least seeing how an oyster farming program would work. They agreed Tuesday to request that the Department of Agriculture do a resource and environmental study of the Alligator harbor area to at least see if the waters are suitable. They will address the issue further once the studies are complete.
