Coastal Cleanup with The Nature Conservancy

and Bald Point State Park

Show you care about our beaches and waterways by joining the 2005 International Coastal Cleanup. This is an annual event organized by the Ocean Conservancy to bring attention and seek solutions to marine pollution. The Nature Conservancy is participating at Phipps Preserve in Franklin County. This is a special opportunity to enjoy this private peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico and Alligator Harbor owned by The Nature Conservancy, and perhaps see a rare blazing star in bloom. The active hurricane season we are experiencing is sure to show us some surprises at Phipps and cause special needs for cleanup.

Where:

John S. Phipps Preserve on Alligator Point. Meet inside the preserve gate.

When:

Saturday, September 18, 9:00 - 11:30 a.m.

What to bring:

Rubber gloves or work gloves to protect your hands when picking up debris. Water bottle. Snacks and refill water will be provided.

What to wear:

Long pants and boots or close-toed shoes to protect you from thorny bushes, biting insects, snakes and other hazards. A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and bug spray are recommended.

RSVP:

Parking is limited. Please RSVP in advance to Leigh Brooks, leigh_brooks@tnc.org or (850) 643-2756. Carpooling is encouraged.

Other information:

Please arrive by 9 a.m. to sign in, receive data card, hear staff briefing, and get location assignment. Volunteers will be dispersed along one mile of beach and bay.

Directions:

The preserve is located at the western end of Alligator Point. Alligator Point is south of Panacea and Ochlockonee Bay, and east of Carrabelle. From SR-98 take CR-370 south (the first paved road west of the Ochlockonee Bay Bridge, about 0.75 miles). Proceed 9 miles to the west end of Alligator Point where the pavement ends at the preserve gate. Drive time from Tallahassee is approximately 1.5 hours.

Additional volunteer opportunity:

Bald Point State Park on the eastern end of Alligator Point is partnering with us on International Coastal Cleanup. They need volunteers from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m., no RSVP necessary. Stop by the recycle bin on Bald Point Road for data cards and bags, and to drop collected trash. For more information, contact park manager Bonnie Allen at (850) 349-9146 or Bonnie.Allen@dep.state.fl.us, or visit http://www.floridastateparks.org/baldpoint/default.asp.
