Posted August 10, 2006 Franklin County Budget Workshop Leaves Plenty to be Concerned About The Franklin County Commission met August 8th in a seven hour workshop to discuss the County Budget for 2006-2007. APTA President, Ken Osborne attended the meeting and reports that… 1. The County is on the fence on whether to leave last year’s millage rate the same or raise it. The new County digest gives the County about $800,000 in additional spending ability. 2. The County will decide at the next County Commission Meeting, August 15th, how to spend the extra $800,000. 3. The County is putting nothing in the budget for the hospital on the premise that it will at least breakeven. APTA is really concerned about this. 4. The County has not decided yet whether to raise salaries for employees or give them additional benefits but will decide that at the meeting. APTA Board member, Allan Feifer, believes that based on a survey done in Wakulla County that Franklin County’s salaries are already the highest in the area. Ken Osborne feels that they will take some of the $800,000 for additional raises. 5. Jimmy G. Mosconis is trying to hold the line on the budget. There was one homeowner there that will be receiving a $40,000 property tax bill, according to Ken. Tax bills of $20,000-$30,000 bills are not uncommon. Warm bodies are needed at the next Franklin County meeting like never before. Please come and bring your neighbors. APTA Board member, Paul Parker, lamented that only about 10 people came to this critical budget meeting. Please don’t let the politicians make decisions affecting the affordability of our houses and our County in a vacuum. We must remind the Commissioners that the citizens are their reason for being, not County operations. The next Franklin County Commission Meeting is… August 15, 2006 at 5:00 PM Franklin County Courthouse Annex Apalachicola, FL
