County Enacts Burn Ban

By David Adlerstein and Lois Swoboda Times Staff Writers

Hoping to prevent the type of devastating wildfire now ravaging portions of the state, county commissioners last week enacted a burn ban that bars all fires on private lands in the county.

By unanimous consent at the May 15 meeting, the commissioners voted to extend a statewide ban on fires on public lands to include private property within the county.

While the burning of yard waste and other materials is banned, grilling remains allowed, provided it is conducted in a secure environment.

The commissioners stopped short of extending the ban to fireworks, but said they would consider that step if the drought conditions that have caused the wildfires do not abate.
